     VIVIAN MAIER:
VIVIAN MAIER WAS BORN IN NEW YORK IN 1926, SHE SPENT MOST OF HER CHILDHOOD MOVING BACK AND FOR BETWEEN THE U.S. AND EUROPE BEFORE SETTLING BACK DOWN IN THE BIG APPLE WHERE HER PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY BLOOMED. VIVIAN LATER MOVED TO CHICAGO WHERE SHE WORKED AS A NANNY FOR THREE BOYS AND CONTINUED TO RECORD THE WORLD AROUND HER. MAIER TOOK SOME 100,000 PHOTOS OVER THE YEARS, MOSTLY IN NEW YORK AND CHICAGO, BUT ALSO IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES LIKE INDIA, CHINA, AND YEMEN. VIVIAN MAIER WAS VERY PRIVATE ABOUT HER WORK AND KEPT MOST OF HER PHOTOS LOCKED AWAY IN STORAGE, BUT BECAUSE OF HER STRUGGLES WITH POVERTY AND HOME INSECURITY, HER STORAGE LOCKERS WERE AUCTIONED OFF. IT WASN'T UNTIL MAIER WAS 81 THAT SHE WAS RECONIZED FOR HER INCREDIBLE WORK, WHEN HER PHOTOS WERE DISCOVERED IN A THRIFT AUCTION HOUSE IN CHICAGO. MAIER PASSED AWAY IN  2008 OF OLD AGE BUT HER LEGACY WILL LIVE ON IN HER CHARMING PHOTOGRAPHY THAT WAS HARDLY RECOGNIZED FOR MOST OF HER LIFE ON EARTH.

    ROBERT CAPA
ROBERT CAPA, BORN IN HUNGARY IN 1913 UNDER THE BIRTH NAME ENDRE FRIEDMANN, CHANGED HIS NAME AND MOVED TO BERLIN WHEN HE WAS 18 TO PURSUE HIS DREAM OF BECOMING A PHOTOJOURNALIST. FOLLOWING IN HIS FOOTSTEPS WAS ROBERT'S YOUNGER BROTHER, CORNELL CAPA (FORMERLY CORNELL FRIEDMAN) WHO ALSO BECAME AN ACCLAIMED PHOTOGRAPHER. CAPA SPECIALIZED IN WAR PHOTOGRAPHY, AND CAPTURED SOME OF THE MOST ICONIC PHOTOS OF HISTORICAL OCCASIONS. ROBERT CAPA DIED IN MAY OF 1954 WHEN HE STEPPED ON A LANDMINE IN AN ACTIVE WAR ZONE IN VIETNAM; IT IS SAID THAT HE DIED WITH HIS CAMERA IN HIS HANDS.

    HELEN LEVITT
HELEN LEVITT WAS BORN AND RAISED IN NEW YORK CITY, WHICH BECAME THE SUBJECT OF MANY OF HER WORKS. LEVITT CAPTURED THE CHAOTIC AND ENCHANTING NATURE OF THE CITY, HER MAIN SUBJECT BEING CHILDREN, WHICH GAVE HER PHOTOS A SENSE OF NOSTALGIA FOR THE IMAGINATIVE LENS OF CHILDHOOD. HER CREATIVITY PEAKED PARTICULARLY IN THE 1940'S BUT SHE CONTINUED TO TAKE AND DEVELOP PHOTOS WELL INTO HER LATE 70'S. LEVITT LIVED HER WHOLE LIFE IN NEW YORK AND EVENTUALLY DIED THERE IN 2009 AT THE AGE OF 95.

    WEEGEE
ARTHUR FELLIG, WHO WENT BY THE STAGE NAME 'WEEGEE' WAS BORN IN 1899 IN ZOLOCHIV, UKRAINE, WHICH WAS TERRITORY OF POLAND AT THE TIME, AND WAS CALLED ZLOCZOW. FELLIG FLED POLAND WITH HIS FAMILY AT THE AGE OF TEN AND ARRIVED IN NEW YORK IN 1910. FELLIG STARTED HIS JOURNEY INTO THE PHOTOGRAPHY WORLD IN THE 1930'S WHEN HE WORKED AS A SQUEEGEE BOY FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES, SQUEEGEEING OFF THE WATER FROM PHOTO PRINTS IN THE NYT DARKROOM. AS FELLIG'S COWORKERS RECOGNIZED HIS TALENT AND PASSION FOR HIS WORK, THEY GAVE HIM THE NICKNAME 'MR SQUEEGEE' WHICH BECAME SIMPLY 'WEEGEE' OVER THE YEARS. WEEGEE LATER BECAME A NEWS PHOTOGRAPHER FOR ACME NEWSPICTURES. HE TOOK DRAMATIC, ACTION-PACKED PHOTOS OF CRIMES, STREET-FIGHTS, FIRES, AND ALL KINDS OF TRAGEDY ACROSS NEW YORK. HOWEVER, WEEGEE ALSO HAD A FAR LESS SERIOUS SIDE. BECAUSE OF HIS CONNECTIONS TO THE NEW YORK UNDERGROUND, WEEGEE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE ABSURD AND ENDEARING PICTURES OF THINGS LIKE CIRCUS CHIMPS AND WILD PARTIES. WEEGEE DOCUMENTED NEW YORK THROUGH A RAW AND UNFILTERED LENS, HE SHOWED BOTH THE WILD AND ECCENTRIC SIDE, AS WELL THE TRAGIC AND GRUESOME SIDE OF THE NY UNDERGROUND. WEEGEE EVENTUALLY PASSED AT THE AGE OF 69 OF A BRAIN TUMOR IN 1968.

"SURE. I'D LIKE TO LIVE REGULAR. GO HOME TO A GOOD LOOKING WIFE, A HOT DINNER, AND A HUSKY KID. BUT I GUESS I GOT FILM IN MY BLOOD. I LOVE THIS RACKET. IT'S EXCITING. IT'S DANGEROUS. IT'S FUNNY. IT'S TOUGH. IT'S HEARTBREAKING." -WEEGEE
